Talk on Nutrition & Lifestyle by Rujuta Diwekar






On Sunday, 25th of October, the Lohana Ladies Circle organized an informative talk on Nutrition & Lifestyle. The key speaker was a highly accomplished & young Mumbai based celebrity nutritionist named Rujuta Diwekar. Rujuta is a winner of prestigious nutrition award from Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) and was voted as one of the '50 most powerful people in India' by People magazine in 2012. She has worked with famous bollywood stars and other renowned personalities including Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Anil Ambani, Richa Chadda and Saif Ali Khan to name a few.

The event was house full, with mostly ladies and a few gentlemen. Rujuta captured the attention of the crowd instantly with her charming personality and infectious humour. She talked for an hour and answered questions from the audience for 45 minutes. Her take on weight loss and good health revolved around traditional, tried and tested methods– keeping up with our cultural values and eating fresh local produce.

For those of you who missed this enlightening session, here's a gist of tips and tricks for healthy living, which Rujuta emphasized on:

·        “Ghee – the super food of 2016!” Incorporate Ghee (clarified butter) in your diet. Although ghee has been considered grossly unhealthy in the last few years by the West, new research proves that Ghee is actually extremely beneficial for healthy living. It is full of nutrients giving tons of energy and also aids in getting rid of stubborn fat. Once Ghee is included in our diet, it regulates our eating habits and patterns. Eating Ghee regularly is not only miraculous for the skin, bones, muscles and ligaments but is also great in prevention of diseases like osteoporosis, arthritis, poly cystic ovaries and thyroid disorders.

·        “Eat local!” Food which is grown near us is just as beneficial as any other vegetable, fruit, grain etc grown across the globe. In fact, we are blessed to be living in Africa where the diet of the locals is perfectly balanced, fresh and nutritious. Incorporating local foods like maize, cassava, kale, sugarcane, coconut, githeri beans, banana and basically anything which is grown organically and near us is the best diet for us. “Nutrition transition” is a current global epidemic faced by many developing countries. It involves moving away from locally grown diets and causing social and economic issues by moving to a "rich man's diet". A rich man's diet comes in two categories - highly processed sugary food & nutritious imported food. Eating local & fresh food whilst staying away from packaged, processed and imported food is the key for not only fat loss & a healthy lifestyle but also a bustling economy.

·        “Bring back pickle and papad in your life!” According to latest research results, Lacto-fermented foods should be an essential part of a healthy diet. Luckily, in our culture we have pickles, which are in scientific terms, lacto-fermented fruits, vegetables and meats. Traditionally we have incorporated pickles in our diet for many centuries, but lately many of us have given up on pickles as they have become notorious for being heavily laden with salt and oil. Sadly, in an attempt to avoid that oil and salt (which by the way is not all that bad for us), we have been missing out on vital gut bacteria, which boosts the metabolism, keeps the immune system up and running and helps achieving a ‘flat tummy’.

·        “Exercise is the backbone of a healthy lifestyle!” 150 minutes of exercise per week is critical to a fit & healthy body. There is no single recipe for exercise, you can do anything you enjoy as long as it challenges your stamina, flexibility and strength. It is important to stay active in our daily lives. For every 30 minutes that we sit idle, we need 3 minutes of exercise to remain fit. In summary, exercising regularly and eating healthily the way our ancestors have been eating for years, is the secret to being fit inside out.
