Talk on Nutrition & Lifestyle by Rujuta Diwekar

On Sunday, 25th of October, the Lohana Ladies Circle organized an informative talk on Nutrition & Lifestyle. The key speaker was a highly accomplished & young Mumbai based celebrity nutritionist named Rujuta Diwekar. Rujuta is a winner of prestigious nutrition award from Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG) and was voted as one of the '50 most powerful people in India' by People magazine in 2012. She has worked with famous bollywood stars and other renowned personalities including Kareena Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, Anil Ambani, Richa Chadda and Saif Ali Khan to name a few.

The event was house full, with mostly ladies and a few gentlemen. Rujuta captured the attention of the crowd instantly with her charming personality and infectious humour. She talked for an hour and answered questions from the audience for 45 minutes. Her take on weight loss and good health revolved around traditional, tried and tested methods– keeping up with our cultural values and eating fresh local produce.

For those of you who missed this enlightening session, here's a gist of tips and tricks for healthy living, which Rujuta emphasized on:

·        “Ghee – the super food of 2016!” Incorporate Ghee (clarified butter) in your diet. Although ghee has been considered grossly unhealthy in the last few years by the West, new research proves that Ghee is actually extremely beneficial for healthy living. It is full of nutrients giving tons of energy and also aids in getting rid of stubborn fat. Once Ghee is included in our diet, it regulates our eating habits and patterns. Eating Ghee regularly is not only miraculous for the skin, bones, muscles and ligaments but is also great in prevention of diseases like osteoporosis, arthritis, poly cystic ovaries and thyroid disorders.

·        “Eat local!” Food which is grown near us is just as beneficial as any other vegetable, fruit, grain etc grown across the globe. In fact, we are blessed to be living in Africa where the diet of the locals is perfectly balanced, fresh and nutritious. Incorporating local foods like maize, cassava, kale, sugarcane, coconut, githeri beans, banana and basically anything which is grown organically and near us is the best diet for us. “Nutrition transition” is a current global epidemic faced by many developing countries. It involves moving away from locally grown diets and causing social and economic issues by moving to a "rich man's diet". A rich man's diet comes in two categories - highly processed sugary food & nutritious imported food. Eating local & fresh food whilst staying away from packaged, processed and imported food is the key for not only fat loss & a healthy lifestyle but also a bustling economy.

·        “Bring back pickle and papad in your life!” According to latest research results, Lacto-fermented foods should be an essential part of a healthy diet. Luckily, in our culture we have pickles, which are in scientific terms, lacto-fermented fruits, vegetables and meats. Traditionally we have incorporated pickles in our diet for many centuries, but lately many of us have given up on pickles as they have become notorious for being heavily laden with salt and oil. Sadly, in an attempt to avoid that oil and salt (which by the way is not all that bad for us), we have been missing out on vital gut bacteria, which boosts the metabolism, keeps the immune system up and running and helps achieving a ‘flat tummy’.

·        “Exercise is the backbone of a healthy lifestyle!” 150 minutes of exercise per week is critical to a fit & healthy body. There is no single recipe for exercise, you can do anything you enjoy as long as it challenges your stamina, flexibility and strength. It is important to stay active in our daily lives. For every 30 minutes that we sit idle, we need 3 minutes of exercise to remain fit. In summary, exercising regularly and eating healthily the way our ancestors have been eating for years, is the secret to being fit inside out.

We would love to hear your thoughts on Rujuta's healthy lifestyle tips. Leave us a comment in the comment box below.

7 healthy weight loss tips

How do I lose weight? How do I keep it off once I have lost the desired amount? How do I do it in a way that I don’t feel tired and weak?

Perhaps, there is no ‘one-fits-all’ formula for these questions. However, here are 7 simple tried & tested ideas, which can help resolve weight issues. Talking from personal experience, these easy steps can help you lose kg a week, if not more.

1. Incorporate oats in your diet
Adding more oats to your diet can have numerous health benefits besides keeping your weight under check. Your body digests oats at a slower pace, keeping you fuller for long. Oats also keep your blood sugar level steady, decrease blood cholesterol & aids digestion. The high fibre & low fat composition of oats makes them a very healthy choice for both breakfast & lunch. An occasional snack of oat crepes with chocolate, strawberries & bananas is my all time favorite.

2. Swap tea, coffee and fizzy drinks with green tea
Green tea is the healthiest beverage one can opt for. It is loaded with antioxidants like catechins, which boost metabolism & aid in speeding up the fat burning process. I recommend having at least 2-3cups of green tea a day. I take mine with breakfast, before working out and going to bed.

3. Replace white rice with brown
Although both white & brown rice are not very different when it comes to calorie count, the nutrition content of brown rice is much higher than that of white. Brown rice has more fiber, proteins, vitamins & minerals (potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, zinc), Omega 3 & Omega-6 Fatty acids. Brown rice is also more filling and you consume it in lesser quantities compared to white. Along with its weight loss benefits it lowers the risk of type 2 diabetes & stabilizes blood sugar levels.

4. Have at least two litters of water everyday
Drinking two litters of water or more everyday has magical health benefits. It keeps you energised, helps in weight loss, lowers blood pressure & helps retain younger & moisturised skin. It is also good for kidney & bowel functions. I make a conscious effort to drink a glass of water 20 to 30 minutes before every meal I consume, which can help reduce the calorie intake and boosts your metabolic rate. To add flavor, you can make your own detox water at home by putting a couple of slices of lemon & cucumber, strawberries one slice of orange/grapefruit & some mint leaves. I usually make it in a large size bottle and consume it during the course of the day. Not only does it taste yum, it also helps flush the harmful toxins from the body along with burning fat faster.

5. Have grapefruit juice with honey after every meal
Grapefruit is my top favourite fruit for its fat burning, lowering cholesterol & blood sugar level properties. Drink half a glass of this amazing drink after every meal and it will burn nearly 15-20% of the calories gained during the meal on the modest side.

6. Carbs & sugar free dinner
An early dinner comprising of high protein & fibre is the ultimate step towards achieving your optimal weight. Cut out carbs completely from the last meal of the day and it can work miracles for you. List of high protein & fiber food contains chicken, fish, meat, eggs, apples, green beans, sweet potatoes, raspberries, strawberries, chickpeas, pumpkin, lentils, artichokes, peas, broccoli and pears.

7. Add 20 minutes workout to your daily routine
It is very important to incorporate a 20 minutes exercise regime in our hectic routines. It can be as simple as walking briskly or any other physical activity you enjoy doing.

Try making these weight management steps part of your daily routine and see the results.

You will be pleasantly surprised!

Nairobi Fashion Market - 17th October'15

The first day of the Nairobi Fashion Market (NFM) was an absolute treat for us all. We were well pleased to encounter fashionistas from all walks of life, dressed to kill in hip street fashion, perfectly tailored African designs, posh dresses and the funkiest of accessories. NFM, by far, has been one of the most culturally vibrant & enriching experiences for us in our time in Nairobi.

The sunny afternoon was an ideal time to come out and meet up with friends whilst enjoying super offers on goodies being offered by over 90 vendors! The stalls were well spread-out, with vendors selling a broad array of products including antique furniture, hand-made jewelry, make up, clothes from high street stores, locally designed outfits, hair products and extensions, trendy imported jewelry, shoes, kids garments and toys and more. You get the hint! One of our favourite stalls was by Roho Billa, selling unique, intricately designed handmade jewelry which truly stood out from the rest.

We munched on more than our fair share of delicious snacks which we bought from the food court area through out the day, and sipped on refreshing fruit juice as we browsed the Kidawa Natural and Organic market. The essential oils smelled divine and the 100% natural nut butters were to die for! There was a great set up for the kids where they were kept busy with a big slide, bouncy castles, trampoline and a clown to entertain. The live bands were playing fantastic music throughout, keeping the crowds fully entertained.

The evening ended for us with a scintillating fashion show from a number of talented designers. The stunning models strutted down the ramp oozing an aura of confidence, which lifted the whole show to the next level. The host did a fabulous job too, fully interacting with the crowd and keeping them glued to their seats. NFM once again proved to be an afternoon well worth our time and money.

How was your experience at NFM? Leave us a line in the comment box below.

Friday 9th October turned out to be an enjoyable day for us as well as many other fashionistas in Nairobi. Villa Rosa Kempinski was the place to be, where Divalicious held their second exhibition in Kenya.

For those who are not aware, Divalicious is a Dubai based brand holding fashion exhibitions with designers originating from all over including India, UAE and Pakistan. Divalicious has not only gained immense popularity in Nairobi after their first exhibition in the beginning of this year, but are also well established in India, Singapore and Sri Lanka!

Yet again, Divalicious brought an assortment of items to outfit all kinds of styles. As soon as we entered the glamorous exhibition we were awestruck with exquisite jewelry and lovely pashmina shawls from India! K couldn’t resist indulging in these stunning pairs of earrings.

The main hall was an amazing array of colors, floating fabric & happy faces all around. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as shoppers went through racks and racks of dresses, kurtis, kaftans, tops, skirts and gowns! We met so many fashion enthusiasts who were smitten by the sheer variety of gorgeous outfits, jewelry and accessories on display.

The fashion show was perhaps the cherry on top, with stunning models strutting down the runway in beautiful outfits designed by many of the vendors.

Congratulations to team Divalicious on pulling off yet another dazzling exhibition, with the tiniest details taken care of.  We look forward to their next exhibition!
